Visual Web Ripper: Using External Input Data Sources

Sometimes it is necessary to use external data sources to provide parameters for the scraping process. For example, you have a database with a bunch of ASINs and you need to scrape all product information for each one of them. As far as Visual Web Ripper is concerned, an input data source can be used to provide a list of input values to a data extraction project. A data extraction project will be run once for each row of input values.

An input data source is normally used in one of these scenarios:

    To provide a list of input values for a web form
    To provide a list of start URLs
    To provide input values for Fixed Value elements
    To provide input values for scripts

Visual Web Ripper supports the following input data sources:

    SQL Server Database
    MySQL Database
    OleDB Database
    CSV File
    Script (A script can be used to provide data from almost any data source)

To see it in action you can download a sample project that uses an input CSV file with Amazon ASIN codes to generate Amazon start URLs and extract some product data. Place both the project file and the input CSV file in the default Visual Web Ripper project folder (My Documents\Visual Web Ripper\Projects).

For further information please look at the manual topic, explaining how to use an input data source to generate start URLs.

Using External Input Data in Off-the-shelf Web Scrapers

There is a question I’ve wanted to shed some light upon for a long time already: “What if I need to scrape several URL’s based on data in some external database?“.

For example, recently one of our visitors asked a very good question (thanks, Ed):

    “I have a large list of amazon.com asin. I would like to scrape 10 or so fields for each asin. Is there any web scraping software available that can read each asin from a database and form the destination url to be scraped like http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/{asin} and scrape the data?”

This question impelled me to investigate this matter. I contacted several web scraper developers, and they kindly provided me with detailed answers that allowed me to bring the following summary to your attention:
Visual Web Ripper

An input data source can be used to provide a list of input values to a data extraction project. A data extraction project will be run once for each row of input values. You can find the additional information here.
Web Content Extractor

You can use the -at”filename” command line option to add new URLs from TXT or CSV file:

    WCExtractor.exe projectfile -at”filename” -s

projectfile: the file name of the project (*.wcepr) to open.
filename – the file name of the CSV or TXT file that contains URLs separated by newlines.
-s – starts the extraction process

You can find some options and examples here.
Mozenda

Since Mozenda is cloud-based, the external data needs to be loaded up into the user’s Mozenda account. That data can then be easily used as part of the data extracting process. You can construct URLs, search for strings that match your inputs, or carry through several data fields from an input collection and add data to it as part of your output. The easiest way to get input data from an external source is to use the API to populate data into a Mozenda collection (in the user’s account). You can also input data in the Mozenda web console by importing a .csv file or importing one through our agent building tool.

Once the data is loaded into the cloud, you simply initiate building a Mozenda web agent and refer to that Data list. By using the Load page action and the variable from the inputs, you can construct a URL like http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/%asin%.
Helium Scraper

Here is a video showing how to do this with Helium Scraper:

The video shows how to use the input data as URLs and as search terms. There are many other ways you could use this data, way too many to fit in a video. Also, if you know SQL, you could run a query to get the data directly from an external MS Access database like
SELECT * FROM [MyTable] IN "C:\MyDatabase.mdb"

Note that the database needs to be a “.mdb” file.
WebSundew Data Extractor
Basically this allows using input data from external data sources. This may be CSV, Excel file or a Database (MySQL, MSSQL, etc). Here you can see how to do this in the case of an external file, but you can do it with a database in a similar way (you just need to write an SQL script that returns the necessary data).
In addition to passing URLs from the external sources you can pass other input parameters as well (input fields, for example).
Screen Scraper

Screen Scraper is really designed to be interoperable with all sorts of databases. We have composed a separate article where you can find a tutorial and a sample project about scraping Amazon products based on a list of their ASINs.

WP Web Scraper Review

WP Web Scraper is the Word Press plugin that works to extract web data into custom Word Press pages. The scraper uses a cURL extraction library for scraping and phpQuery for parsing HTML. This tool is a good reliable plugin among the other scraping software and plugins.
Plugin Usage

This scraper plugin can be inserted either into a WordPress theme or directly by the shortcode into the page HTML.

The shortcode use of the plugin is simple. Insert into the HTML page the plugin denotation:
[wрws url="..." selector="..."  {other optional arguments here} ]

For the PHP implementation insert the following tag into a template:
<?php echo wpws_get_content($url, $selector, $xpath, $wpwsopt)?>
Plugin features

The scraper plugin is rich in features, giving much more flexibility compared to its counterpart, Web Scraper Shortcode.

    Caching of scraped data is defined as a cache timeout in minutes.
    The scrape plugin allows one to customize a user-agent (see in example).
    Error handling is well elaborated with the plugin: silent fail, error display, custom error message or display expired cache (see in example).
    It allows one to clear or replace a regex pattern from extraction before output into the WordPress page (clear_regex, replace_regex parameters).
    A good feature of the plugin is having a basehref parameter. Basehref is a parameter which can be used to convert relative links from the extracted data into absolute links. For example, basehref=”http://yahoo.com”, will convert all relative links to absolute by appending http://yahoo.com to all href and scr values. Note: basehref needs to be a complete path (with http) with no trailing slash (see in example).
    It allows to pass POST arguments to a URL to be scraped.
    postargs=’name1=value1&name2=value2′
    The scrape plugin provides the means for the dynamic conversion of scrape data into specified character encoding (using incov) in order to scrape data from a site using a different charset.
    For advanced use, it can create scrape pages on the fly using dynamic generation of URLs to scrap or post arguments based on your page’s get or post arguments.
    It also has a callback function to be invoked for parsing the scraped data.

Example

An example of the use of the plugin.

    We want to extract a piece of html on this URL:
    http://ca.finance.yahoo.com/q?s=rab.v&ql=1
    append the base to the relative links:
    basehref=’http://ca.finance.yahoo.com’
    having a custom user-agent:
    user-agent=”bot at extract-web-data.com”
    switch error handling to on:
    on_error=”error_show”
    select the second child div of the element with id=’yfi_comparison’ :
    selector=”#yfi_comparison div:eq(1)”
    output result as HTML (by default) rather than a plain text:
    output=”html”

The result follows:
[wpws url='http://ca.finance.yahoo.com/q?s=rab.v&ql=1' basehref="http://ca.finance.yahoo.com" user_agent="bot at extract-web-data.com" on_error="error_show" selector="#yfi_comparison div:eq(1)"  ]

_________________________________
Note that since we’ve applied the basehref argument, the context links are full, not relative.

This scraper’s parameters array is dumped here:
[wpws url='http://ca.finance.yahoo.com/q?s=rab.v&ql=1' basehref="http://ca.finance.yahoo.com" user_agent="bot at extract-web-data.com" on_error="error_show" selector="#yfi_comparison div:eq(1)" output="html" ]
Decoding option

One may specify a charset for iconv charset conversion of scraped content through an htmldecode parameter. You need to specify the charset of the source URL you are scraping from. If ignored, the default encoding of your blog will be used.
Callback

Using the callback function, you can extend the plugin to do advanced parsing. Simply put, the callback function will parse the extracted value and return the required data. Your callback function can reside in the functions.php of your theme. The function will take a single string parameter, parse it and return a string as output.
Special notes about the scrape plugin

    Plugin does not work for more then 1 selector.
    Be cautious using the plugin since it stores the scraped pages in the temporary wp-options table (MySQL database). So the problem is that the plugin does not take care of flushing those intermediate data. If you intend to extract large data chunks this table might grow dangerously large to put down MySQL.

Summary

This plugin is a convenient tool for a fast scrape of dynamic web data. It provides much flexibility as to sifting results, appending for relative links, callback function call and others. I would recommend it for miscellaneous data-rich web page development.

How to scrape CSV data files

This short post in to guide you in how to scrape CSV data files. You may ask, why do we need this scrape if those data are already in files? The answer is that you might need to spend quite a lot of time in downloading the files into one place and sorting or merging them.

Python’s CSV library is well able to do a lot of the work for you. Another handy tool is the ScraperWiki toolset and library. So, even if you don’t have much ability in programing, you can adopt a scraper, adjust it for your situation and get data scraped and saved into SQLite database in ScraperWiki for further download. Also you could generate a view from your data scraped.

First of all I got a CSV scrape guide from ScraperWiki: here.

For test purposes I’ve published in the web a simple CSV file; here is the file.
Basic steps

Scrape the target web file into variable ‘data‘ by the url of the file:
import csv
import scraperwiki
url = 'https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?key=0AmNIZgbwy5TmdENjMmZ2cm5VQXJJMWlQVENIek5Ta2c&output=csv'
data = scraperwiki.scrape(url)

However, in pure Python we need to use ‘urllib2′ library instead of ‘scraperwiki’:
import urllib2
import csv
url = 'https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?key=0AmNIZgbwy5TmdENjMmZ2cm5VQXJJMWlQVENIek5Ta2c&output=csv'
data = urllib2.urlopen(url)

Split lines from CSV library using ‘splitlines’ method (only in ScraperWiki):
data = data.splitlines()

and put them into a CSV object called ‘reader‘:
reader = csv.DictReader(data)

After that we loop over the lines in the ‘reader‘ object to print and/or save them into database:
for record in reader:
   print record
   #for scraperwiki only:
   scraperwiki.sqlite.save(['Value'], record)
The whole script
import urllib2
import csv
url = 'https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?key=0AmNIZgbwy5TmdENjMmZ2cm5VQXJJMWlQVENIek5Ta2c&output=csv'
data = urllib2.urlopen(url)
reader = csv.DictReader(data)
for record  in reader:
    print record
The script for ScraperWiki
import csv
import scraperwiki
url = 'https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?key=0AmNIZgbwy5TmdENjMmZ2cm5VQXJJMWlQVENIek5Ta2c&output=csv'
data = scraperwiki.scrape(url)
data = data.splitlines()
reader = csv.DictReader(data)
for record in reader:
    #record['non-ansii-field'] = record['non-ansii-field'].decode("cp1252")
    print record
    #for scraperwiki only:
    scraperwiki.sqlite.save(['Value'], record)

Click here to fork (copy), adjust and run this scraper. To edit and run scraper just press ‘Edit‘ button on the ScraperWiki dashboard. You might need to create a ScraperWiki account for saving script there.
Storing data in database

For the storing the data, whether in MySql database or in SQLite (ScraperWiki), you need to take heed of data encoding that you scrape. For storing in the database, the most fitting encoding is UTF-8 (obligatory in SQLite of ScraperWiki). Non-ANSII characters might be misencoded when inserted into/retrieved from the database.

If the data source is from Western Europe or the Americas, it might be fitting to decode from ‘cp1252‘ or ‘latin-1‘ encodings directly into UTF-8 encoding. Do it by adding the method .decode(‘<encoding name>’) to the field in question. For example, if the field <name> is in ‘latin-1‘ encoding try to add this line inside the loop prior to storing into database:
record['name'] = record['name'].decode('latin-1')

Read a referrence to non-UTF-8 encodings handling in Python.
Dictionary reader for CSV library

The .DictReader method (instead of .reader) can be used to create a dictionary of your CSV data, the values in the first row of the CSV file will be used as keys. This eliminates a need for naming each field in the code.
Additional tip:

If you want to manually to copy all CSV files into one file in Windows, go to the command line (Start->Run), move to the folder where files are located:  cd <path to a folder> and execute the command in console:  copy *.csv <name>.csv . Instead of <name> paste a name of the new CSV file.

Outsourcing Data Entry- The Outsourcing Success Story

Although a company’s data entry work is often among the most monotonous jobs imaginable, they require the skills of trained personnel. For all its tedium, data entry is essential to a company’s survival, without being one of its core operations, and many companies have turned to outsourcing data entry work so that its employees can spend their time on more lucrative matters. The data entry tasks will be performed by competent contractors in developing nations like India, Malaysia, China, and Brazil, and for a much lower cost than it would require if it continued to be done in-house.

How Outsourcing Data Entry Works

Companies have been outsourcing data entry work almost as long as the global technological development has supported outsourcing. The outsourcing of data entry work requires a company to either mail hard copies of its data forms, or scan and email or fax, electronic images of them, to the outsource contractors who will complete the data entry job.

The data entry workers then input information into a database on a computer, and either store it on a magnetic medium for shipping or email it back to the sending company in encrypted form.

Because data entry jobs do not require and advanced degree of computer savvy, outsourcing data entry work is far less difficult than outsourcing more complex processes. Data entry work does not demand an ongoing communication between the outsourcing company and the data entry provider, and the outsourcing of data entry work to date entry firms in underdeveloped nations has for the most part been one of the big outsourcing success stories.

Freelance Data Entry Outsourcing

The Internet, of course, has played a huge part in the increase of data entry workers, in particular in poorer countries, who freelance their services. A simple Internet search will bring up dozens of sites shopping the services of data entry coders who work for what would be considered starvation wages in Europe or the US.

These data entry workers normally price their services according to both the sizes of the requested projects, and their own work histories. Outsourcing data entry [http://www.1outsourcing.com/Articles/Outsourcing_Call_Center.php] work to these coders is usually a matter of posting the specifics of a job, and letting the various coders make bids on it. The going rate for data entry jobs can begin at less than $100, but there is no guarantee that the coder whose bid is accepted will actually complete the job as specified. While most of the reverse auction sites will return the money for an incomplete or substandard effort, the data entry still has not been finished, and business operations may fall behind until it is.

Data Entry Services From India - Definitely Boon-Rich

Whatever the opinion of the US presidency concerning outsourcing to India, the practice is sure to continue for a long, long time. The monetary benefits from outsourcing become crystal clear when you look at this statistic for the pay of entry level accountants. For a US worker, the hourly wage is $23 but for a company in India, it is only $11.22. The scope of data entry services from India is really wide with centers in the country offering their assistance for finance, academic, insurance, healthcare, website and legal related applications of these services. Read more of this article and understand why outsourcing of the back office task to the world's largest democracy is definitely boon rich.

Data Entry Services from India - the Benefits

The first important benefit as discussed in the first paragraph is the monetary benefit. US companies can cut their operating expenses by at least 30 percent when they outsource to India. This is because of the reduced operating expenses of companies in India, which in turn is because of the lower costs for leases, rents, utility rates, taxes and so on. More benefits are discussed below:

• Experts in the English language - India excels many other countries in English language competence. Thus use of language in the output and communication is not a problem. A lot of companies in India are giving their staff training in US accent, so that too is not a problem.

• Advantageous Time Difference - Some people may see the time difference between the US and India as disadvantageous because they wouldn't be working at the same time. However, the time difference is actually advantageous because US companies can function for more number of hours. When the employees of the US companies sleep, the employees of the Indian companies would be hard at work to finish the back office task by the specified deadline.

• Quality Output - You can expect to get practically error-free output from the country because of the employees being highly educated. These employees (a lot of them in the 16 to 25 age group) also have exceptional knowledge of software and other Information Technology. Quality levels are consistently maintained through the process of double entry which is very beneficial in identifying and correcting arbitrary miskeyed strokes that even experienced data entry staff would miss.

• Reduce Risks - Indian providers of data entry services are known for their expertise. So while you're busy taking care of your everyday core business responsibilities, they're giving you error-free output that can reduce error-related risks for your business.

• Favorable Turnaround - This is a benefit which many Indian business process outsourcing companies highlight on their websites. Whatever the volume of your project, it would be within a favorable turnaround without compromising quality.

More Advantageous Services

It's not just data entry services but also medical transcription, medical billing and coding, website design, search engine optimization, call center operations and other services from India which are boon rich. Companies across the globe know this and continue to benefit from the fact.

As a leading outsourcing company, Managed Outsource Solutions (MOS) can help you streamline your data entry processes and improve the overall functioning of your organization.

Data Mining Explained

Overview
Data mining is the crucial process of extracting implicit and possibly useful information from data. It uses analytical and visualization techniques to explore and present information in a format which is easily understandable by humans.

Data mining is widely used in a variety of profiling practices, such as fraud detection, marketing research, surveys and scientific discovery.

In this article I will briefly explain some of the fundamentals and its applications in the real world.

Herein I will not discuss related processes of any sorts, including Data Extraction and Data Structuring.

The Effort
Data Mining has found its application in various fields such as financial institutions, health-care & bio-informatics, business intelligence, social networks data research and many more.

Businesses use it to understand consumer behavior, analyze buying patterns of clients and expand its marketing efforts. Banks and financial institutions use it to detect credit card frauds by recognizing the patterns involved in fake transactions.

The Knack
There is definitely a knack to Data Mining, as there is with any other field of web research activities. That is why it is referred as a craft rather than a science. A craft is the skilled practicing of an occupation.

One point I would like to make here is that data mining solutions offers an analytical perspective into the performance of a company depending on the historical data but one need to consider unknown external events and deceitful activities. On the flip side it is more critical especially for Regulatory bodies to forecast such activities in advance and take necessary measures to prevent such events in future.

In Closing
There are many important niches of Web Data Research that this article has not covered. But I hope that this article will provide you a stage to drill down further into this subject, if you want to do so!

Should you have any queries, please feel free to mail me. I would be pleased to answer each of your queries in detail.

What is Data Mining? Why Data Mining is Important?

Searching, Collecting, Filtering and Analyzing of data define as data mining. The large amount of information can be retrieved from wide range of form such as different data relationships, patterns or any significant statistical co-relations. Today the advent of computers, large databases and the internet is make easier way to collect millions, billions and even trillions of pieces of data that can be systematically analyzed to help look for relationships and to seek solutions to difficult problems.

The government, private company, large organization and all businesses are looking for large volume of information collection for research and business development. These all collected data can be stored by them to future use. Such kind of information is most important whenever it is require. It will take very much time for searching and find require information from the internet or any other resources.

Here is an overview of data mining services inclusion:

* Market research, product research, survey and analysis
* Collection information about investors, funds and investments

* Information extraction
* Pre-processing of data from the data warehouse
* Meta data extraction
* Web data online mining services
* data online mining research
* Online newspaper and news sources information research
* Excel sheet presentation of data collected from online sources
* Competitor analysis
* data mining books
* Information interpretation
* Updating collected data

After applying the process of data mining, you can easily information extract from filtered information and processing the refining the information. This data process is mainly divided into 3 sections; pre-processing, mining and validation. In short, data online mining is a process of converting data into authentic information.

Internet Outsourcing Data Entry to Third World Countries

Outsourcing pieces of your company is cost effective. The economic downturn has made companies explore more fiscally conservative options for their company. Internet outsourcing is one of the most popular options to effectively cut costs. Entire departments that cost companies millions a year can be shipped overseas. This allows companies to focus their resources on the crucial elements of their company and not use resources on trivial but necessary matters.

One of the most common departments outsourced is customer service. Maintaining a customer service department requires health benefits, rent, and costly salaries. This creates a huge expense for a company for simple tasks. Customer service departments are being outsourced to India and China for a fraction of the cost. Customer service often requires a straightforward question and answer script. The answers can be given to anyone who has the script. This makes outsourcing customer service effective.

If someone calls for customer support and the customer service representative answers the phone and does not know the answer there is a solution. Calls can be transferred to customer representatives that have extensive product knowledge. This elite group of customer service representatives can be located at corporate headquarters or can be transferred to a trained group of outsourced customer representatives that have knowledge beyond the script. This is one of the easiest ways to cut costs and maintain the value of the company. Over 90% of customer support questions are repeat questions that can be scripted.

Data entry is one the most common outsourced departments. People who do not speak the same language as the origin country can often do data entry tasks. This makes outsourcing data entry extremely cost effective. Numbers and symbols are universal making data entry straightforward in most foreign countries.

All outsourcing tasks can be distributed online. Internet outsourcing is the future to big and small businesses creating cost effective business plans. Placing an order online for electronic equipment has become a normal way of shopping. Placing online orders for work will be common in the decades to come.

Companies worry about outsourcing because they're concerned about quality. Outsourcing has become big business in China, India, third world and developing countries. Projects outsourced are taken very seriously and business management is similar to western societies. The regulations are often more strict than the United States and the work is often held to a higher standard to insure repeat business.

Outsourcing Data Entry As Online Jobs Without Investment: A Blessing to the Business World

A very profitable source of income in the business world is data entry. All they need to accomplish the tasks is to have a steady source of workers to enter the information. Traditionally, these jobs were done internally or through a specialized firm but in this new era of work done using the internet, more and more companies are outsourcing these data entry online jobs to home workers who can get the job done without investment of their part.

No, there is no investment required to be able to participate as an online worker as long as you have a fast, secure computer and a fast high-speed internet connection. As for software, most data entry jobs are done directly on an online platform, but if you need to use a word processor or a spreadsheet to do part of the work, you don't even need to invest in software such as MS Office for you can use the free Open Office or the web-based Zoho.com.

Businesses, organizations, medical units, telecom industry and financial firms all rely heavily in data entry firms to process their collected information. This has bought along outsourcing companies who collect these contracts and, in turn, dispatch them to online workers. This is where people looking for online works in the field of data entry will find the proper contacts to assure continuous feed of contracts to be fulfilled.

The advantages of outsourcing work to online workers;

    An always-growing source of highly skilled typists
    A considerable time saver
    Maximum accuracy within quality outputs
    Reduction of cost such as office space and material
    Maximum revenues
    No lack of resources

There was a time when outsourcing this type of work was very expensive because of the lack of available employees to do the work. Nowadays, mainly because of the internet and the quality of fast personal computers, an army of individuals is readily available to take on the workload directly from their home office.

In this perspective, the outsourcing firms can offer their services at a lower cost to their clients making outsourcing the most economical and practical choice. The overwhelming popularity of outsourcing data entry jobs is such that moms at home, students and professionals seeking extra income are taking part in such jobs. They are tested before being offered to be part of the working resource to these firms to assure that quality is maintained to a high level.

In any case, data entry as an online jobs without investment is not a difficult task to manage as long as you have a reasonable knowledge of using a computer and comfortably navigating the internet. This type of work can assure you of a regular stream of work and income where you do not need to invest a lot of your time or follow a very strict schedule.

Unraveling the Data Mining Mystery - The Key to Dramatically Higher Profits

Data mining is the art of extracting nuggets of gold from a set of seemingly meaningless and random data. For the web, this data can be in the form of your server hit log, a database of visitors to your website or customers that have actually purchased from your web site at one time or another.

Today, we will look at how examining customer purchases can give you big clues to revising/improving your product selection, offering style and packaging of products for much greater profits from both your existing customers and an increased visitor to customer ratio.

To get a feel for this, lets take a look at John, a seller of vitamins and nutritional products on the internet. He has been online for two years and has made a fairly good living at selling vitamins and such online but knows he can do better but isn't sure how.

John was smart enough to keep all customer sales data in a database which was a good idea because it is now available for analysis. The first step is for John to run several reports from his database.

In this instance, these reports include: repeat customers, repeat customer frequency, most popular items, least popular items, item groups, item popularity by season, item popularity by geographic region and repeat orders for the same products. Lets take a brief look at each report and how it could guide John to greater profits.

    Repeat Customers - If I know who my repeat customers are, I can make special offers to them via email or offer them incentive coupons (if automated) surprise discounts at the checkout stand for being such a good customer.
    Repeat Customer Frequency - By knowing how often your customer buys from you, you can start tailoring automatic ship programs for that customer where every so many weeks, you will automatically ship the products the customer needs without the hassle of reordering. It shows the customer that you really value his time and appreciate his business.
    Repeat Orders - By knowing what a customer repeatedly buys and by knowing about your other products, you can make suggestions for additional complimentaty products for the customer to add to the order. You could even throw in free samples for the customer to try. And of course, you should try to get the customer on an auto-ship program.
    Most Popular Items - By knowing what items are purchased the most, you will know what items to highlight in your web site and what items would best be used as a loss-leader in a sale or packaged with other less popular items. If a popular product costs $20 and it is bundled with another $20 product and sold for $35, people will buy the bundle for the savings provided they perceive a need of some sort for the other product.
    Least Popular Items - This fact is useful for inventory control and for bundling (described above.) It is also useful for possible special sales to liquidate unpopular merchandise.
    Item Groups - Understanding item groups is very important in a retail environment. By understanding how customer's typically buy groups of products, you can redesign your display and packaging of items for sale to take advantage of this trend. For instance, if lots of people buy both Vitamin A and Vitamin C, it might make sense to bundle the two together at a small discount to move more product or at least put a hint on their respective web pages that they go great together.
    Item Popularity by season - Some items sell better in certain seasons than others. For instance, Vitamin C may sell better in winter than summer. By knowing the seasonability of the products, you will gain insight into what should be featured on your website and when.
    Item Popularity by Geographic Region - If you can find regional buying patterns in your customer base, you have a great opportunity for personalized, targeted mailings of specific products and product groups to each geographic region. Any time you can be more specific in your offering, your close percentage increases.

As you can see, each of these elements gives very valuable information that can help shape the future of this business and how it conducts itself on the web. It will dictate what new tools are needed, how data should be presented, whether or not a personal experience is justified (i.e. one that remembers you and presents itself based on your past interactions), how and when special sales should be run, what are good loss leaders, etc.

Although it can be quite a bit of work, data mining is a truly powerful way to dramatically increase your profit without incurring the cost of capturing new customers. The cost of being more responsive to an existing customer, making that customer feel welcome and selling that customer more product more often is far less costly than the cost of constantly getting new customers in a haphazard fashion.

Even applying the basic principles shared in this article, you will see a dramatic increase in your profits this coming year. And if you don't have good records, perhaps this is the time to start a system to track all this information. After all, you really don't want to be throwing all that extra money away, do you?

Understanding Data Mining

Well begun is half done. We can say that the invention of Internet is the greatest invention of the century which allows for quick information retrieval. It also has negative aspects, as it is an open forum therefore differentiating facts from fiction seems tough. It is the objective of every researcher to know how to perform mining of data on the Internet for accuracy of data. There are a number of search engines that provide powerful search results.

Knowing File Extensions in Data Mining

For mining data the first thing is important to know file extensions. Sites ending with dot-com are either commercial or sales sites. Since sales is involved there is a possibility that the collected information is inaccurate. Sites ending with dot-gov are of government departments, and these sites are reviewed by professionals. Sites ending with dot-org are generally for non-profit organizations. There is a possibility that the information is not accurate. Sites ending with dot-edu are of educational institutions, where the information is sourced by professionals. If you do not have an understanding you may take help of professional data mining services.

Knowing Search Engine Limitations for Data Mining

Second step is to understand when performing data mining is that majority search engines have filtering, file extension, or parameter. These are restrictions to be typed after your search term, for example: if you key in "marketing" and click "search," every site will be listed from dot-com sites having the term "marketing" on its website. If you key in "marketing site.gov," (without the quotation marks) only government department sites will be listed. If you key in "marketing site:.org" only non-profit organizations in marketing will be listed. However, if you key in "marketing site:.edu" only educational sites in marketing will be displayed. Depending on the kind of data that you want to mine after your search term you will have to enter "site.xxx", where xxx will being replaced by.com,.gov,.org or.edu.

Advanced Parameters in Data Mining

When performing data mining it is crucial to understand far beyond file extension that it is even possible to search particular terms, for example: if you are data mining for structural engineer's association of California and you key in "association of California" without quotation marks the search engine will display hundreds of sites having "association" and "California" in their search keywords. If you key in "association of California" with quotation marks, the search engine will display only sites having exactly the phrase "association of California" within the text. If you type in "association of California" site:.com, the search engine will display only sites having "association of California" in the text, from only business organizations.

If you find it difficult it is better to outsource data mining to companies like Online Web Research Services

Why Web Scraping Software Won't Help

How to get continuous stream of data from these websites without getting stopped? Scraping logic depends upon the HTML sent out by the web server on page requests, if anything changes in the output, its most likely going to break your scraper setup.

If you are running a website which depends upon getting continuous updated data from some websites, it can be dangerous to reply on just a software.

Some of the challenges you should think:

1. Web masters keep changing their websites to be more user friendly and look better, in turn it breaks the delicate scraper data extraction logic.

2. IP address block: If you continuously keep scraping from a website from your office, your IP is going to get blocked by the "security guards" one day.

3. Websites are increasingly using better ways to send data, Ajax, client side web service calls etc. Making it increasingly harder to scrap data off from these websites. Unless you are an expert in programing, you will not be able to get the data out.

4. Think of a situation, where your newly setup website has started flourishing and suddenly the dream data feed that you used to get stops. In today's society of abundant resources, your users will switch to a service which is still serving them fresh data.

Getting over these challenges

Let experts help you, people who have been in this business for a long time and have been serving clients day in and out. They run their own servers which are there just to do one job, extract data. IP blocking is no issue for them as they can switch servers in minutes and get the scraping exercise back on track. Try this service and you will see what I mean here.
